Our children went to Acorn for a number of years and found it a very difficult experience overall. The school was set up by Parent teachers whose children all attend/attended the school. There is a survival of the fittest attitude and because the school is governed by the parent teachers who set it up, unless you are a 'chosen one', your children find it difficult to get on within the rarefied atmosphere. There is a unwritten rule that parents must behave in certain ways - for instance it would be completely frowned upon for a childminder or nanny to pick up a child at the school gate. Parent's commitment is consistently questioned and emphasised.
Children do not start learning academically until they are well over seven. They do this very slowly. It can be very frustrating for a bright child. However, it is a beautiful system proscribed by Rudolf Steiner, and children are unspoilt by the vagaries of modern society. Because the academic standards are not very high, a child will often emerge as a teenager, very confident, very happy - but they cannot add up, use a computer or have a reasonable instinct about the modern world! The school encourages instrospection and cliqueiness. Although one falls in love with the family nature of the place, if you are not a chosen one, or your child cannot live within the very tightly set boundaries, the school can become a very difficult and uncompromising place.
