i enjoyed my time at Bromsgrove enormously- I enjoyed a thriving social life, a lovely group of close friends (the house system helps develop this) and a good academic record.
Bromsgrove pushes you to your limits- this is not a bad thing, although can sometimes increase personal stress levels it will eventually pay off, i have witnessed even the most unmotivated student gain grades which were assumed out of their reach.
Most of the teachers are inspiring, and especially in 6th form become mentors and advisors rather than typical figures of fear (although of course- as in any school there are a few exceptions).
The facilities and campus are lovely and Bromsgrove has a real communal atmosphere, the majority of people make firm friends across year groups and houses. Although there is no theatre with tiered seating, the school used to (Im not sure if its still the same) have close ties to the Artrix theatre in the town and annually produce a show for the venue.
There is a heavy emphasis on sport at bromsgrove, with countless sporting events and teams- especially rugby, this however creates a slightly unbalanced faculty with numerous highly trained sports coaches and no real drama department (despite having a fully functional studio) yet the music department is excellent. And the school does live up to the manifesto of encouraging individual talents and desires.
There are other downsides; the disciplinary system is slightly heavy handed- with similar punsihment given to those who commit both minor and major 'offences' (most of which are laughable), the school day is long compared to the state system yet and despite claims that after the first few weeks it does become second nature- you do still feel shattered at the end of the week and saturday school (which is now optional)i always personally considered a nuiscence.
Bromsgrove is not for people who have thin-skin, without sounding dramatic one has to be able to hold their own ground and make an impact without fading into the background. Friendly banter is rife, and again one must laugh and both take and give it- yet this banter never develops into what one would consider even coming close to bullying.
Bromsgrove moulds young people into independent, confident adults who, when they leave, are more than ready to take on the working world. Unlike most pulic school students, Bromsgrovians are far from stuck-up or arrogant and do not find it difficult to make friends in the 'real world', without (most importantly) loosing contact with the firm friends one makes at this lovely school, or indeed the school itself (the old bromsgrovian society is extremly active!)
