I attended MTS from the age of 7, right up to the end of my A-levels. I really cannot speak highly enough of this fantastic institution.

My years at Merchants were some of the best of my life. It provided me with a fantastic grounding and a well rounded view of the world.

The headmaster for almost all of my time at the school, Mr Dawkins, was fond of saying that MTS is "not just a sound academic education" which is certainly does provide "but an education for life, preparing pupils in every aspect for the real world." Though he was replaced with Mr David Cook in 2005, the sentiment still remains at MTS.

The sporting life at MTS is of a high standard, all major and some minor sports are catered for with teams aimed at various skill levels. The PE staff at merchants have a reputation which speaks for itself. Two are ex-national rugby players with an impressive array of caps between them and more coaching qualifications that you could shake a highly qualified stick at. Ben Kay, current England rugby union player is an old boy of the school. Rowing and sailing are also highly supported and the MTS trophey room is filled with accolades from these sports. Sporting facilities are outstanding. Onsite facilities: 25m swimming pool, modern and well equipped resistance gym, indoor basketball gymnasium, 3 tennis courts, 1 astroturf hockey pitch, 3 outdoor rugby pitches and a cricket square. The school also has a vast expanse of rugby/hockey/football pitches at Hall Road playing fields, less than 2 miles away.

Extra curricular activities are of an equally high standard, The Combined Cadet Force is arguably the finest in the North West (regularly winning prestigious trophies in all aspects of CCF activites). Drama, music and other arts are embraced at the school, concerts, exhibitions and plays are a regular feature.

Academically, the league tables show what MTS is capable of producing and does indeed produce each year. Off the top of my head I would say 98% of boys go on to university after school and around 10 a year go to Oxford or Cambridge(average year group size in upper 6th form-approx 75-90 boys).

I owe everything to MTS, it really did mould me into the man I am today. Through an extra curricular activity available at MTS (which only one other school in the area offers and certainly not to the same standard) I found my calling in life. Since leaving the school I have had great success in moving towards achieving my main career goals and I have no doubt in my mind that without MTS I would not be where I am today.

It is clear from my review how I feel about this fine school, I would recommend it to anyone able to send their son there. It's History speaks for itself and I truly feel that Merchant Taylors' School for Boys, Crosby, is one of the best schools of it kind in the country.
