Wakefield Independent School is worthy of a nomination for many reasons, staff at WIS obviously teach as a vocation. Their love of teaching and the children who attend the school is most apparent.
The school has such a wonderful 'family' atmosphere. Emphasis is not ONLY on academic achievement, but also on the moral and emotional wellbeing of the children. Some schools are considered to be the best because of their academic achievments and are usually highly selective enabling them to achieve the highest grades. Some schools are considered to be the best because they charge the most!! In my humble opinion WIS a non selective school is the best school because they teach not only academic subjects and encourage each and every child to achieve his or her own personal best; but they teach the child how to be a kind, thoughtful and morally rich individual...value? Priceless.
If you see a group of children in school uniform it can represent many things....when a group of WIS children approach you can be certain of polite and courteous conduct..again..priceless.
When your child leaves school you hope that they have aceived the best results that they can, you hope that they have learnt something, at WIS the children leaving have learned many things, not least how to live and how to be a valuable member of the community. Well educated is one thing....well educated AND morally rich is a rare jewel in our sometimes failing educational establishments in this country. I nominate WIS quite simply because it is wonderful in so many ways...personally I would not send my child anywhere else. Thank you Mrs Caryl and ALL of your staff.

The quality of education is excellent, in no small part due to the low pupil to teacher ration per class (around 15). However, extras touted as benefits are poor i.e. there IS a holiday club but it is £14 per day, sometimes doesn't run on certain days and starts and ends at ridiculous times meaning that you may as well have taken the day off work anyway i.e. 9 to 4.30 for example. There used to be many older teachers which is encouraging but these seem to be leaving and being replaced with very young inexperienced teachers. There are many additional costs which are not mentioned at your initial interview i.e. swimming costs about £3 a week whether your child needs tuition or not. I pay about £200 a year for my child to have swimming lessons on Saturday but I am still forced to pay an extra £3 per week for compulsory additional lessons. Non-uniform day seems to happen at least once a month which costs you an extra quid. There is a compulsory school coat costing about £70 which you can only buy from one shop (what's the deal there?). Swimming trunks are £15 and they are a £4 pair you could probably buy from Asda but with a WIS logo on which comes off after about 3 swims. There is a massive amount of homework too. If you think that because you are paying through the nose for a good education all the hard work will be done for you at school by the teachers, think again. If you value a low pupil to teacher ratio then this is the school for you but if you and your partner are both working then keep plenty of annual leave in reserve for random incept days and school holidays because the holiday club is useless if you have a job.

A wonderful 'family' atmosphere. Highly qualified and caring staff. The headmistress knows the first name of EVERY child and is always available and approachable. This school does not have he best of facilities however it more han makes up for this with the quality of teaching. Every chid is made to feel special NOT just the academically gifted. I cannot recommend Wakefield Independent School and its current staff highy enough.
